Meet Colin

It is said the most important shot in the game of golf is the next one. The same can be said for someone living with a physical disability.

For young veteran members like Colin, the Turn provided the answer to his question of "what's next?". Colin suffered a traumatic brain injury when a sniper bullet penetrated his combat helmet while serving in the Gulf War. This injury left Colin with a stroke-like traumatic brain injury that eroded his self-esteem in addition to creating a life altering disability.

At The Turn, however, Colin has found a newfound confidence. Through adaptive recreation and fitness activities, The Turn's programming has helped him gain back some of the strength, endurance, and mobility he lost when he was injured, while the social aspect has helped improve his speech and cognitive abilities.

According to Melissa, Colin’s mother, as a soldier Collin was an athlete. At The Turn, he is once again treated like the athlete he was. She goes on to say that “The Turn is all encompassing for Colin. It includes friends’ activity and family. We are a golf family so now we are able to play golf together.” Further, the confidence Colin has gained from his participation at The Turn has him now enjoying other activities such as skiing and archery. This is what The Turn is all about. A reintroduction to life and the joy it can bring. When the mind and body work together, amazing things do happen.

Colin's story is just one of many shared by veterans who is now part of The Turn family. Your support through this special evening allows us to continue to serve veterans, free of charge, today and tomorrow.
